The French have their own anti-heroes, too. It can’t be all berets, cigarettes and first growth Bordeaux all the time, you know. Enter Jacques Mesrine, a criminal of hard-to-believe Gaul. Er, gall. Soldier, kidnapper, bank robber, killer, writer, alleged French Intelligence operative, escape artist, and master of disguise, you couldn’t invent this guy. Or his sideburns. And he got around, too – in 1969 after a failed kidnapping in Canada, he was arrested in… Arizona.
